Fortes' house is a family holiday home for three Africa based brothers of Goan origin and is set in a large orchard site with road access on two sides. The brief was to create a structure that stretched across the site using its arms to define different planting zones on the land. The building was also designed to open up onto each of these planting zones.
The basic approach in the layout was to create three separate stone enclosed structures and use the space between them as the common living, dining and verandah areas. Thus the exposed stone work runs continuously into the interiors of the common area.
To support this feel, frameless glass has been used to separate the inside and outside at the doors and windows. The stone work has also been articulated to provide a level of detail using traditional architectural elements of arches, corbels, etc.
